Q.What's a cheap place to live in Los Angeles that is close to the film studios?Related Search:
Los Angeles
I'm planning on interning for Paramount, and I need a cheap place to stay. What's the rent? What's the address? Also, I might split the rent with a friend who is an actor; where is a cheap apartment that isn't too far from where he auditions?
A.There is no such thing as a cheap place to stay that is close to Paramount. At least nothing that an intern can afford. We see this every day in this forum: Everyone wants to move here, and is looking for “cheap/affordable and safe". However, such a place just doesn’t exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's a safe area, then it's more expensive. If you need good schools, add a couple hundred bucks a month on top of it. If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll quickly see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $1,000-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) easily run $3,000 or more. Want to live near the beach? Expect to pay a premium. "LA" is such a big place, there are so many neighborhoods/cities where you can live. Of course, even within a city or neighborhood, there are safer sections and less-safe sections. In Los Angeles, some nice sections are West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Eagle Rock, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, West Hills, Chatsworth. This is not an all-inclusive list, but it's a start.

Q.How to travel cheap around Europe via Train?Related Search:

I'm planning to travel to Switzerland, Austria and Czech Rep this summer via train from UK. One of the cheapest options is to buy the Global Pass, which is only for European residents. However I'm not a European resident, which means that I need to find another cheap options to travel. Can anyone give any suggestions?
A.The global Interrail pass is for European residents. The global Eurail pass is for non-European residents. So look at Eurail passes, but take into account that Czech Republic and the Eurostar are not part of the Eurail pass. [Link]  I personally would fly from the UK to Switzerland and from Prague to the UK. For Czech Republic I would by point-to-point tickets, for Switzerland and Austria I would compare point-to-point with national rail passes. See [Link]  for flights

Q.The story on cheap stocks-Is there money to be made? How much does one need to know?Related Search:
Investing
I am thinking about buying up some cheap stocks-like in the $2-20 ea bracket. Has anyone that is "new" to stocks and the market made any money this way? How much of a time investment would it be to learn the ins and outs and keep an eye on the markets? Some say we(the us) is going into a mild recession of sorts-it seems so. Would you suggest informed investing in some cheap stocks right now?
A.Cheap Stocks (penny stocks) is the the place to make money in the market after about 10 years or more of trading experience. Most professional stock traders (and semi-professional) won't ever go near them. I spent the past thirty years investing. One year ago started to learn trading. I've gone through a dozen books which 'll need to re-read again. I listen to [Link]  every week. I watch [Link] / every day. The hardest thing to "understand" is the relationship between profit and money management. To be successful at penny stocks you'd have to assume 70% of your trades will lose. I trade mid and large cap stocks. I'm considered "good" if 50% of my trades are good. The trick is a good win/loss ratio. Managing your losses is critical. I'm making money......... but I need to improve my skills. There's no way I know enough to get into stocks under $20.00. A professional trader I listen to every day basically says the same thing; [Link]  (Check it out between 9:15AM - 11:30AM & 1:30PM - 4:00PM, every trading day (EDT). Pick up some books on trading. That's a start...... This stuff is hard work.... but fun and potentially rewarding.

For Molière's play, see The Miser.
Ebenezer Scrooge encounters "Ignorance" and "Want" in A Christmas Carol

A miser is a person who is reluctant to spend money, sometimes to the point of forgoing even basic comforts. The term derives from the Latin miser, meaning "poor" or "wretched," comparable to the modern word "miserable".

[edit] Famous misers in history

  • Ephraim Lópes Pereira d'Aguilar, 2nd Baron d'Aguilar - an eccentric Jewish nobleman.
  • Andrew Carnegie - Scottish born American industrialist, was notoriously "thrifty" until his old age, when he endowed numerous charities, including the New York Public Library. He was infamous for tipping a dime for services rendered, especially when a much larger tip was appropriate.
  • The Collyer brothers of New York City, who earned notoriety for living in a filthy, booby-trapped home.
  • Hetty Green - Cortland miser - was considered the world's wealthiest woman in 1916.
  • Joseph Nollekens - Londoner generally considered to be the finest British sculptor of the late 18th century, he was also a notorious miser.
  • Gene Burd is a 76-year-old journalism professor at the University of Texas that walks seven miles per day round trip to and from work and has donated over a million dollars to an educational foundation. Professor Burd was the subject of a front page story in the Austin American-Statesman on July 19, 2007 in which it chronicles his miserly ways. He has never married, holds his hand over his mouth when he speaks, has no automobile, lives in a small apartment, wears shoes he found in the trash, and picks up pennies to "pay his phone bill." He amassed a fortune on a modest salary due to his extremely frugal ways.[1]
  • Charles Huffman was a miser from the 1950s in the U.S. He was found dead on a Brooklyn, New York street with no money in his pockets. The police traced him to a $7 per week room that was filled with bank books and more than $500,000 in stock certificates. He was characterized by Franz Lidz, in The New York Times, on October 26, 2003.

[edit] Stereotypes

The stereotype of the miser is a wealthy, greedy man who lives miserably in order to save and increase his treasure. Other stereotypes are the "thrifty" Scotsmen and the "frugal" Dutch.

A related stereotype is the capitalist as portrayed in, for example, Soviet propaganda. Both are usually moneylenders or industrialists, in any case businessmen, who possess great personal wealth but aren't bothered by the fate of the poor. The difference is that, unlike the miser, the capitalist does spend his money and is typically portrayed leading a decadent life. Anti-Semites have portrayed Jews both as misers and/or capitalists.
