| Q. | Why did Nietzche choose the name Zarathustra? | Related Search: Philosophy | | | One of Nietzche's most famous books is called Thus Spoke Zarathustra, where the "main character" is named Zarathustra. Where exactly did he get that name and why did he choose it for the Zarathustra in the book?
| | A. | Zarathustra was the ancient prophet who founded Zoroastrianism. Nietzsche considered the historical Zarathustra to be responsible for establishing "good" and "evil" as absolute metaphysical concepts -- a fundamental mistake, in his view.
Since one of the purposes of his fictional character was to overthrow this absolute morality and replace it with superior values, he named him Zarathustra (a sort of supreme irony).
| Q. | What is your favorite passage from Thus Spake Zarathustra? | Related Search: Philosophy | | | Keep in mind that Nietzche had hoped that this book would be mankind's new bible for the next two hundred years.
| | A. | Nietzsche wrote that to have understood, that is, lived through, six sentences of Thus Spake Zarathustra was to be raised to a higher plane of mortality.
I think the speeches must be read as a whole. I have lived through a number of speeches, to wit Of Reading and Writing, Of the Bestowing Virtue, The Night-Song, The Grave-Song, Of Immaculate Perception, The Soothsayer (though I forgot what the dream meant -- doh!), The Return Home, and Of the Three Evil Things. Other favourites include Of the Despisers of the Body and Of the Sublime Ones. I basically love the whole book.
As for a favourite passage, I will cite the following, for several reasons:
"And verily, ye good and just! In you there is much to be laughed at, and especially your fear of what hath hitherto been called "the devil!"
So alien are ye in your souls to what is great, that to you the Superman would be frightful in his goodness!
And ye wise and knowing ones, ye would flee from the solar-glow of the wisdom in which the Superman joyfully batheth his nakedness!
Ye highest men who have come within my ken! this is my doubt of you, and my secret laughter: I suspect ye would call my Superman -- a devil!"

| Q. | Do you know some related texts to Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra? | Related Search: Books & Authors | | | I need to name other literature that have common themes and such for a paper.
| | A. | There were a lot of themes covered in the book but i dont know if you're looking for specific Nietzchien themes or the same philosical themes that he covers.
For one that conveys Nietzche's theme of the victory of life over death the closing section of Thomas Mann's 'The Magic Mountain' may be useful. (Nietzche took inspiration from him).
These are also recommended, as Nietzche was influenced by these writers. (These books in particular can be seen to contain similar themes).
Michel de Montaigne - The Complete Essays
La Rochefoucauld - Maxims
Ralph Waldo Emerson - A Modern Anthology
There is also a tone poem entitled, 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' by Richard Strauss that is a musical interpretation of the text.
