I heard about volunteering at a Romanian Hospital taking care of babies. I'd like to use my vacation for that. But why is volunteering more expensive than a luxury vacation? Anyone know a way to volunteer taking care of babaies for free? I pay for my flight and lodging and just show up at the orpanages...is that possible? Who's done this? I volunteer locally. But for my vacation I wanted to do this internationally....Any feedback on affordable volunteering would be great. Thanks! :)
A.hi what a neat idea! I have heard of habitat for humanity type international vacations before but not orphanage vacations. I volunteer in Korea though not as a vacation :-) It is not very cheap to fly or live here. But I think you could find a great deal if you advertised in advance of wanting to rent a room in a local persons home i know that is often done by the students that come here to teach for a year the orphanages are great here they try to put as many kids as possible in foster care but there are still many many in orphanages, I know there is a place in Gumi Korea that one of the Fulbright teachers stayed at for a month. I will look again for her website and get back to you. you can also check out the websites below the first one is a volunteer group and they might be able to set you up with temporary accommodations. English is spoken here but for the most part don't expect a daily fluent conversation in English outside of the capitol (not to put you off just to prepare you) I hope it works out for you MK

I am especially interested in England. We have a timeshare that would enable us to stay for a week there with the volunteering added on at either end. I have run across several websites including vfp.org. Has anyone had any experience with them in particular or others that they would recommend. We are in our mid 40's and I want to travel but want to be helpful at the same. Did you feel the experience was beneficial to the organization and what did you get out of it that stayed with you the most?

Q.All of volunteer abroad programs cost more than a luxury vacation. Is there a way to do this for less?Related Search:

I want to volunteer in a place like a school or orphanage in need of help. I am going to college to become a teacher, and I love working with kids and doing community service. But all of the programs cost a ton! More than what I would pay if I wanted a first class vacation in these areas. Does anyone offer this service whose sole purpose isn't to make big bucks? I want to travel... I figure I might as well help others while doing it.
A.[Link]  [Link]  Both are places where you can volunteer overseas. You pay for your trip and souvenirs, volunteer during the day, and stay with a local family who feeds you and provides shelter. Not that expensive. I am having two international exchange students this fall in my home and want to check out these two organizations for the following year so I can go too as I don't make big bucks. There are different countries you can go to volunteer, from Brazil to Nepal. There are even group events for volunteering, which I think would be fun too! Hope these help.

What are some good sites? Im 22 yrs old and would really like to do this. Do I need to have a college degree to be able to? Im guessing a passport (which I have). How does one go about this... so many questions... Sorry... What ever information you have I need!!! Thanks so much! All answers are wanted:) Im not a church goer.. but thanks :)
A.Here are some good sites with loads of opportunities listed: [Link]  [Link]  [Link]  No, you do not need a college degree. Qualifications vary so some positions will require it, but a large number just require a willing heart. Yes, you'd need a passport, as well you may need to get immunizations, depending on where you're going and possibly a visa. Also, if you go to an area that is a malaria risk, you should take anti-malarial drugs (there's no immunization for malaria, instead you would need to take ongoing drugs while you're in the country), As far as how to go about it, first think about what kind of experience you want to have. For example, rural or urban? in a developed country or developing country? one that speaks a language you know, or do you want the challenge of learning a new one? live with other volunteers, on your own, or with a local family? what kind of work do you want to do? what kind of living conditions - running water, electricity, phone, internet? what kind of health risks and immunizations are required for the country you're thinking of going to? how long are you wanting to go? I recommend going for a minimum 2 months, if possible, because it takes time to get to know your way around, the culture, the people, your job, etc. and before you know it, you're back on the plane again! To help you choose which organization to go with, ask if you can speak to their former volunteers, looking at what support they cover - you should get enough pre-travel info so that you know what to expect and how to adapt to your new culture, what screening they do - I avoid ones that take anyone and everyone, what in-country support they give, how long they've been in operation, and just what kind of vibe you get from their website and by talking to them on the phone. Read up on the country and the culture before you go so you can be well-prepared. If you are patient, open to different ideas and ways of doing things, flexible, and have a sense of humour then you'll have a fantastic experience that will be life changing! I've volunteered in several African countries, as well as in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. I HIGHLY recommend it!! I call it my 'selfish' work because it so incredibly rewarding. We're filled up on the outside with all of our 'stuff' but I find people in developing countries so full on the inside, where it counts. My overseas experiences have been challenging and tough at times, but yet the best times of my life. I have also learned so much from the indigenous people I've met - so warm, friendly, joyful, courageous, and to be greatly admired.

Volunteer travel, volunteer vacations or voluntourism is travel which includes volunteering for a charitable cause. Voluntourism often involves extended stays in remote destinations, with significant price tags. With these high barriers to access, many travellers may consider volunteer vacations out of reach.[original research?] In recent years, "bite-sized" volunteer vacations have grown in popularity. The types of volunteer vacations are diverse, from low-skill work cleaning up local wildlife areas to providing high-skill medical aid in a foreign country. Volunteer vacations participants are diverse but typically share a desire to “do something good” while also experiencing new places and challenges in locales they might not otherwise visit.[citation needed]

There are also other types of travelling that engage people with scientific research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Participants cover a fee that would include expenses on the different sites worldwide, and engage in projects according to their interest or location.

[edit] History

Originally most volunteer vacations were undertaken by people with a direct connection to a particular cause and were considered more as short term, intense volunteer projects rather than vacations. [1] Many of these organizations were long-standing international development assistance organizations which placed short-term volunteers on community development project sites.

[edit] 1990s

During the 1990s the travel industry developed niche products and firms to provide volunteer vacations to people who had no previous experience with a cause, and to cater to the increasing number of young people taking gap years.[citation needed] These providers expanded the market but also drew criticism for the impact of their methods. At the same time, the first edition of "Volunteer Vacations" by Bill McMillon was published, featuring under 200 non-profit organizations which facilitated such service opportunities. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, more than 55 million Americans have participated in a volunteer vacation, and about 100 million more are considering taking one. [2]

[edit] Controversy

While some experts on volunteering welcome the expansion of volunteer vacations as an opportunity to provide more resources to projects and to encourage a volunteer ethic in people,[citation needed] others have pointed out that the business methods used by tour operators, such as exclusivity deals, and catering to the needs of the volunteer rather than the volunteer project, exploit the communities the projects are intended to help.[3]
