| Q. | Our children's elementary school needs Halloween decorations. How can we get some free? | Related Search: Other - Education | | | The Halloween party is being hosted by the PTA, we have a very limited budget. There are 700 children in the school. We asked for volumteers and only 6 of us, all parents, signed up to do the event. We expected more parents to help... So we have 2 problems... volunteers and decorations....
What do you think we should do?
| | A. | I work at a Jr. high; I have found that sometimes volunteering is too much of a commitment for parents. But, sending fliers home of your wish list, asking parents to try and pick up 1 item works well. It doesn't make anyone feel obligated. During certain holidays I have even made phone calls to local grocery stores to see if they wanted to donate things; you would be surprised at how giving people can be. Good luck :) | | | |

| Q. | What are good cheap winter gifts to make for a large amount of people? | Related Search: Hobbies & Crafts | | | My organization hosts an annual Christmas party, and as a holiday gift, we give them a small token of appreciation. We have volunteers come in to make 100-200 of these small gifts, but we have little budget. Last year we made cocoa cones with hot cocoa powder, marshmallows, and crushed candy canes. The year before that we made a small ornament or decoration snowflake out of wires and beads. Do you have any ideas for small cheap homemade gifts for this year?
| | A. | Hey, that sounds like fun! Can I help? lol
One year I made shortbread cut into xmas shapes and rumballs and wrapped them up pretty and another year I made little ornaments out of Polymer Clay. Polymer Clay is fairly cheap but sold in blocks of colour or you could use white and paint them. There are heaps of tutorials on the net. But that may be a little involved. Maybe Glass ornaments decorated with glass paint, glue and glitter?
I think the cookie idea is great too.
You could find your favourite christmas recipe and use only the dry ingredients, place them in a glass jar (they look nice if you use a funnel and layer the different ingredients) print a label of the recipe and place it on the jar and decorate the lid. You could also add one cookie cutter per jar. They will have to add the wet ingredients, ie milk, egg etc... that way the food will not go off. It's cheap, you don't have to bake and worry about mess and ovens etc and they can make it themselves!
The only problem is the glass jars...maybe you could collect them throughout the year.
Maybe a small plant.. you could buy them ready made or buy the pot plants, add the soil and plant a seed. Then add care instructions. You could also do a mystery seed with care instructions but they won't know what it is until it grows.
If all else fails there is a great site that has heaps of handmade xmas ideas:

| Q. | How much food do I need for a baby shower for 30-35 women? | Related Search: Entertaining | | | So I volunteered myself to throw a baby shower for one of my girlfriends. She's due in November, and the tenative date for the shower is September 2. Another girl is taking care of all the games and that stuff, so I just have to deal with food, punch, decorations and invitations.
I want to do mostly finger foods. I was thinking about doing 2 or 3 kinds of finger sandwiches (like smoked salmon and chicken salad). I was also going to do a crab salad in endive leaves recipe that I found, and possibly some melon and prosciutto canapes that I make all the time. And one dessert I was going to do was little phyllo cups with fresh fruit.
My question is, how much of each thing will I need for 30-35 people?
Does anyone have any fun, pretty little finger-food recipes you'd like to share with me?
Does anyone have a good recipe for punch you'd like to share?
Any other tips for someone who's never thrown a baby shower before?
She's having a boy, and the guest will be all women, and most of us are 20-25 years old.
| | A. | Allow for 3 of each item for each guest. I know this sounds like allot, but it is better to have a little too much than not enough.
Simple punch:
Any Citrus-y fruit juice
Ginger ale
Freeze a block of the punch for ice - mix equal parts of juice and ginger ale for the punch (pineapple guava is really good).
Finger food:
Mix 1 or 2 of the following into softened cream cheese:
real bacon bits
diced green or black olives
diced green chillies or onions
crushed pineapple
diced marachino cherries
Take regular white bread, cut off crusts and roll out flat. Cover stack w/ moistened towel. Spread smushed bread w/ cream cheese mixture and roll up jelly roll style. Chill overnite, then slice into 1/2 inch slices and serve. | | | |
| Q. | What can I do on Christmas? Any volunteer work? ? | Related Search: Christmas | | | I would like advice on what to do for Christmas.
I'm only in my 30s but I will spend Christmas alone. I was in an abusive relationship but I left him. His sister used to be jealous of me because I used to do things with their family, so she used to tell him to do and say horrible things to me and he was so gullible he used to do what she said. She even told him to say things that made me feel worse about my family situation. It made me have panic attacks. I'm glad I got away from him now. I don't have any real family who are nice. I sometimes used to spend Christmas with my mother and younger sister. My parents were abusive towards me as a child. I was adopted and so was my older sister who left home because of the physical abuse and she's the only person who sticks up for me and admits what went on when I was a child, but she won't say too much about it because she doesn't want to start any trouble. I'm not that close to her because of her leaving home. I don't see my older sister much now and she has her own family. My parents had their own child after me and have helped her buy a house for her and her half wit husband and have given her everything for free. The younger sister sticks up for the parents and won't admit what they had done to me so she can keep being given everything. When I go there it's as if I have to pretend everthing is normal. My mother even says stories as if everything was great and she was nice to me. None of the other family bother with me as I'm not really related to them. One auntie even said I should be grateful they adopted me, just because I didn't go to a family gathering because of my panic attacks and being with them makes them come back again. My grandmother was nice but she's dead now. My mother found out I told a person about her hitting me with sticks and other things so hasn't invited me over for Christmas this year, so it's as if I still have to suffer for the abuse now I'm older. I haven't been in a relationship since my husband as I think some men know I'm alone and vulnerable and think they can try and use me for one thing. I was lonely after my husband and I saw some man in the army and all he ever wanted to do was come to my place with a Chinese take away and try it on. I started studying for a law degree part time and put all my effort into that so I didn't have to have any emotional hurt from anybody and didn't bother about men for a while. I don't really want to join a dating site just to find a man who might not be suitable just so I can have somebody to spend Christmas with.
My problem is that I don't know what I will do on Christmas and I don't want to feel bad. Should I just sit at home on my own, or is there a volunteer group I can join that will also be fun for me? I also feel depressed as I feel there hasn't been any justice for me and I don't know why people have been so cruel to me. I searched for my natural parents for years and when I found them they were nasty to me and don't even send me a Christmas card, so I feel bad about that too as I don't know how people can do that. I'm not a nasty person as I always try and be truthful and kind. I just want to get away from Christmas but I can't as eveywhere I go there are Christmas songs and adverts on the TV. I quite like the decorations and lights so have put some up in my flat.
| | A. | You could check with Salvation Army about who needs volunteers on Christmas. You could fix treat bags and take them to people who have to work on Christmas day like in a hospital or gas station, or go visit a rest home and find someone who has no family. You both will be blessed, by giving your time.
Don't sit at home and don't be depressed. There are others who will be lonely at Christmas, so you can bring happiness to them by being a friend. Christmas is about giving and you have a chance to make someone's Christmas brighter by giving your time.
