Q.What is the education system like in Vancouver?Related Search:
Vancouver
I'm considering moving to Vancouver and I have a young daughter who would just be starting school next fall. I was wondering what the education system is like in Vancouver (surrounding) area.
A.School is not bad. The teachers are great in Vancouver. You might need a bit of advance notice to get into school. If you can't get in, there is always private school. My son's school has an average class size of about 30.

I've been in London before, and I know what to expect, especially when comes to using public transportation. I've never been in Toronto or Vancouver so I don't know what to expect at all. I'd like to know what the public transportation system is like there since I don't plan to bring my car with me if I go to Canada.

Q.referencing journal - vancouver system?Related Search:

what does this mean? BMJ 1998;123:147-189 i get that it is from the journal british medical journal (hence the BMJ) and that it is from 1998, but what does the rest mean? If i have a journal i want to reference with a year, volume, number and pages how would i reference that? e.g BMJ, year 1987, volume 8, no.7, pg200-300?? Any help appreciated
A.That first citation might be wrong or incomplete, because volume 123 of BMJ is not 1998. In the 1998 issue there are a couple of articles starting on page 147 which are “MRI is best technique…..”, and “Cognitive behaviour therapy…”, but it has nothing to do with the numbers 123. I reckon the writer of the paper you got that from lost track of the volume number and decided to make it up??? [Link] / For your journal reference: Vancouver style now uses the National Library of Medicine guide “Citing Medicine” as the authority for referencing rules (as stated in October 2008 update at [Link] / ), so for a journal reference see sample at : [Link]  Best, RH [Link]

Q.How is living in Vancouver, WA different than living in Portland, OR?Related Search:
Portland
Do many people live in Vancouver and commute to Portland? Is the transit system as good in Vancouver as it is in Portland? Which is a better place to live, Portland or Vancouver, WA?
A.Portland is more urban although just south of Vancouver. Oregon has no sales tax but does have a state income tax. Washington has sales tax but no state income tax. The benefit and/or preference depends upon the individual situation. As for public transit both the Portland system "Tri-Met" and the Vancouver system "C-Tran" serve each city with commuter routes as well as local service. Portland being larger has a more vast transit network although both work together to link the cities. It is a quick and easy commute between either although more people seem to live in Vancouver and commute to Portland than the reverse and to that end more express bus service is geared in that direction. Some traffic congestion is usually the case on the interstate bridge but the HOV bus lanes avoid most of that. The primary Tri-Met route between the two cities is #6 and the primary C-Tran route between the cities is #105 although many other choices exist. Good Luck!

The Vancouver system, also known as the 'author-number' system, is a way of writing references in academic papers. It is popular in the physical sciences, and is one of two referencing systems normally used in Medicine[1], the other being the Harvard system.

[edit] History

The Va [2] whose version "should be considered as the authoritative style" according to the British Medical Association (BMA)[1].

The 2007 ICMJE edition, at paragraph IV.A.9.b. Reference Style and Format, refers to the detailed style guide at the NLM's Citing medicine. Several versions of the Uniform requirements were published, including the 1991 BMJ publication[3], the 1995 CMAJ publication[4] and the 1997 Annals of Internal Medicine publication.[5] Journals were asked to cite the 1997 requirements. As of 2004, the editors of Haematologia simply "invite[d]" their authors to visit www.icmje.org for the 2003 revision of the Uniform requirements.[6]

[edit] Usage

[edit] Labelling citations

References are numbered consecutively in order of appearance in the text – they are identified by Arabic numerals in parentheses (1), square brackets [1], superscript1, or a combination[1] such as used in Wikipedia.

[edit] Format of citations

Different formats exist for different types of sources, e.g. books, journal articles etc.

[edit] Journal articles

Standard journal articles

  • Leurs R, Church MK, Taglialatela M. H1-antihistamines: inverse agonism, anti-inflammatory actions and cardiac effects. Clin Exp Allergy. 2002 Apr;32(4):489-98.

As an option, if a journal carries continuous pagination throughout a volume (as many medical journals do) the month and issue number may be omitted:

  • Thomas MC. Diuretics, ACE inhibitors and NSAIDs - the triple whammy. Med J Aust. 2000;172:184–185.

If there are more than six authors, the first six authors are listed followed by "et al.":

  • Guilbert TW, Morgan WJ, Zeiger RS, Mauger DT, Boehmer SJ, Szefler SJ, et al. Long-term inhaled corticosteroids in preschool children at high risk for asthma. N Engl J Med. 2006 May 11;354(19):1985-97.

Note, however, that the NLM lists all authors for articles.

As an option, a unique identifier from a database may be added to the citation:

  • von Itzstein M, Wu WY, Kok GB, Pegg MS, Dyason JC, Jin B, et al. Rational design of potent sialidase-based inhibitors of influenza virus replication. Nature. 1993 Jun 3;363(6428):418-23. Cited in PubMed; PMID 8502295.

Articles not in English

As per journal articles in English:

  • Forneau E, Bovet D. Recherches sur l'action sympathicolytique d'un nouveau derive du dioxane. Arch Int Pharmacodyn. 1933;46:178-91.

The NLM adds an English translation of the title enclosed in square brackets and a language designator.
