| Q. | Do you think Criticizing the politics of the Vietnam war berates soldiers who fought over there.? | Related Search: Military | | | I don't think people think before they speak. Especially those who never fought in a combat situation. Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen only follow orders given. Most are not vicious killers. Most have families. But one thing for sure...they all want to survive.

| | A. | While there are many aspects from the Viet Nam police action that affected the political arena I feel this is one of the most important: that the American people, particularly the youth of our country, found a unifying voice against the traditional political machine that ruled this country. The "business as usual" practices of the administration, our law enforcement agencies and federal agencies (CIA, FBI) were challenged as never before. The governments clandestine practices were bared, the administrations dealings were revealed, and the outright disregard for our constitution was discovered by people that cared about their country and were branded as dissidents. This in direct opposition to what the constitution guaranteed as rights to its citizenry. It opened the opportunity and practice of keeping our government in check. Unfortunately the ardor by which this was pursued, over time faded, and we returned to the
business as usual scenario. But for a brief period we had the opportunity to stand and be heard, and observed. It was also our real first exposure to the horrible effects of war, because it was seen in real time and not in government produced newsreels seen in the movie theaters as in WWII. The nightly news was blood & guts reporting, napalm and bombings, and the results of both. It heightened our awareness of the political scene and how it affected us and our policies. It brought to a close a chapter in our history that was not one of our finest hours. Praise the men and women that served, but damn the reasons we were there at the behest of old men too afraid to lead the charge.
And what did we learn? Not a thing! Maybe this President will "get it." We can only harbor hope. | | | |
