| Q. | Is it possible to fix Speakers or other electronics blown by a surging outlet? | Related Search: Car Audio | | | Please don't tell me what the wall is doing or how it needs to be grounded. Totally not the question. I want to know if the electronics, or specifically the hundreds of dollars worth of speakers, can be fixed. How complicated is it? What has to be replaced?
| | A. | It is possible to fix anything, for a price. That being said, you are most likely screwed.
If you have passive speakers that are blown out, then you would need to re-wind the voice coils. This is basically impossible to do yourself, and more costly to have someone do it than simply replacing the driver. (You can put a new driver in the same box to save some cash.)
Amps and other electronics are a slightly different story. If you got REALLY lucky, there is just a blown fuse somewhere in the unit. The likelihood of that being the case is minimal, however. You would need to have a circuit diagram, and oscilloscope, and a multimeter to have any luck at being able to diagnose and repair a circuit board to the component level. A repair shop may have more luck, but you are probably hosed. Either way, you are out hundreds of dollars.
Best thing to do is to learn from your mistake, and never make it again. | | | |
