My Brother… Nikhil is a 2005 Indian film set in Goa. The movie portrays the life of the protagonist, Nikhil, from 1987 to 1994, when AIDS awareness in India was considerably low. The film director states that the film is based on true historical fact, and the standard disclaimer about fictitious content was just a compromise with the Indian government to gain permission to make the film. [edit] Plot
Nikhil (played by Sanjay Suri) does not tell the story directly; the story is told to the viewer through the experiences and from the points of view of Nikhil's father, mother, girlfriend, boyfriend, lawyer, and most important his sister (played by Juhi Chawla).
The film is set in Goa, a small costal state in India in between 1989 and 1994 and deals with HIV/AIDS stigma. When an ace swimmer, Nikhil Kapoor (Sanjay Suri) is discovered to be HIV positive, he is rejected and shunned and even feared by people around him, also comes to the surface stigma against his homosexuality, as his relationship with Nigel De Costa (Purab Kohli) is revealed. How he recovers and triumphs over it, is the story of the film.
