Q.What does a female martyr get for blowing herself up?Related Search:
Current Events
I was just reading the news today about a female suicide bomber who blew herself up in Baghdad, killing at least 64 people. If a male martyr gets 72 virgins, what the heck does a female martyr think she's supposed to get?
A.She is going to get the same thing the male martyr is going to get a ticket to hell.

Q.Can a martyr be someone who dies while killing others for his/her beliefs?Related Search:
Religion & Spirituality
Are there religions that define a martyr this way? If so, do you agree with it?
A.No. A martyr is someone that dies for their beliefs, not someone that kills for their beliefs.

Q.How do I deal with my friend who is a complete and total martyr?Related Search:
Psychology
I have a friend who complains and complains and does nothing about his displeasure's in life and complains and complains more? How do I gently tell this person they are a martyr.
A.Not a martyr - more like an annoying crybaby. What you could begin to do is counter his complaints with suggestions & ideas to fix his situation. If he comes back with "that'll never work" or other excuses, you know his problem is something different. He makes excuses for his failures & displeasure of life & chooses to vent rather than improve his situation. If you come right out & call him a name - he'll only tell you you're wrong. Make him see his own malfunction by the examples of his actions & reactions.

Q.How do you deal with someone who plays that martyr card?Related Search:
Psychology
I know that I don't want to feed in to it because that would encourage future martyr-like behavior, right? Like the bad kid who likes attention even if it is negitive attention...is this the same situation?
A.The two situations are both vying for attention, but the type of attention each one wants is different. The bad kid wants any kind of attention - whether it is being yelled at or being praised. Generally, the "bad kids" haven't had much luck going the good route, so they do negative behaviors to get that attention. A martyr is someone who does something self sacrificing for the greater good. Playing the "martyr card" as you put it, would be for that person to do something self sacrificing for the greater good, and then talking about it to either garner sympathy or guilt from another person. For example, the wife ( sorry for the stereotypical scenario) cooks and cleans the house, all the time while watching two young children. She allows the husband to go to the baseball game with his friends. Later she may talk to her friends about how much she sacrifices for the family to gain sympathy. Or she may complain to her husband about what she gives up to get him to feel guilty. But playing the martyr, she'll do it again and again. The martyr is able to take the moral high ground- they gain a sense of superiority. Whereas the bad kid will do anything for attention, the martyr would never think of doing anything morally wrong- it would jeopardize their moral standing.

Q.Why did the suffragettes have to show Emily Davison as a martyr?Related Search:
History
I'm doing my history homework, I know that they had to show her as a martyr to try and get more publicitry for the cause, but why else? Thanks!
A.Ignatius Loyola the founder of the Jesuit Movement said that the function of a martyr is simply to be a martyr. heir martyrdom is simply used as a tool for the agenda (and benefit) of others. Bear in mind that, Britain being Britain, the newspaper headlines the following day were more concerned with the condition of the horse (who had no choice or say in the matter of someone jeopardising its life to make a minority political point) than of Ms Emily Wilding Davison - who was from a privileged well-to-do family, had a University education, and had a militant stance in the Suffragette Movement. "She was arrested and imprisoned for various offences, including a violent attack on a man she mistook for the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George. She went on hunger strike in Strangeways Prison and was force-fed. In Holloway prison, she threw herself down an iron staircase as a protest. She landed on wire netting 30 feet (10 m) below, which saved her; however, she suffered some severe spinal damage. On 13 July, the night of the 1911 census, Davison hid in a cupboard in the Palace of Westminster overnight so that on the census form she could legitimately give her place of residence that night as the "House of Commons". Tony Benn MP once unofficially placed a plaque there to commemorate the event. In 1913, she planted a bomb at David Lloyd George's newly built house in Surrey, damaging it severely." Source - Wiki Dubious causes very often need martyrs to reinforce the moral of the dwindling faithful. Remember, the Suffragette were not a mass popular movement. It was very much a middle-class enterprise with limited support, seeking political privilege for middle-class women. In an era where the Parliamentary vote was based on a property owning qualification, and large numbers of working class men were unable to vote because of it. Then, the idea of a Universal Female Suffrage in Britain was a nonsense. You can't agitate for a privilege for one gender, to the exclusion of another, and call it "Equality". It is sheer nonsense.

Q.Do you view home school martyr David Koresh as the standard by which all home school parents should be judged?Related Search:
Home Schooling
Do you view now deceased home school leader David Koresh as a martyr for our cause? Is Koresh the "gold-standard" that all other home school parents should be judged by? How common is it for middle-aged parents to marry pre-pubescent girls in their home school group?
A.You must be joking. He was hopefully no standard for anyone. I think those poor people were truly mislead, misinformed about the truth, abused physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically. No,there should be NO modeling of that kind of conduct by any mature adult anywhere. It is against the law to engage in those types of marriages with children. Wake up and read the papers. I hope David is no martyr for any educational cause.

Going tomorrow night to see Ben Taylor at Martyr's in Chicago. The show starts at 9pm and we already have tickets How early should we get there to get a good table near the front?
A.To get a good seat (and a table) I'd suggest you getting there around 730-8pm.

From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48:

Martyr \Mar"tyr\, n. [AS., from L. martyr, Gr. ma`rtyr, ma`rtys,
prop., a witness; cf. Skr. sm[.r] to remember, E. memory.]
   [1913 Webster]
   1. One who, by his death, bears witness to the truth of the
gospel; one who is put to death for his religion; as,
Stephen was the first Christian martyr. --Chaucer.
      [1913 Webster]

To be a martyr, signifies only to witness the truth
of Christ; but the witnessing of the truth was then
so generally attended with persecution, that
martyrdom now signifies not only to witness, but to
            witness by death. --South.
      [1913 Webster]

   2. Hence, one who sacrifices his life, his station, or what
is of great value to him, for the sake of principle, or to
      sustain a cause.
      [1913 Webster]

Then if thou fall'st, O Cromwell,
            Thou fall'st a blessed martyr ! --Shak.
