Lai Vung (Vietnamese: Lai Vung) is a district (huyện) of Dong Thap Province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam.
As of 2003 the district had a population of 160,125.[1] The district covers an area of 220 km². The district capital lies at Lai Vung.[1] This district is famous for its Mandarin orange which usually ripens in Tết holiday season. Other specialities are nem- a kind of fermented pork and Phong Hoa pomelo.
[edit] Divisions
The district is divided into communes:
- Lai Vung
- Phong Hòa: Pomelo production center
- Định Hòa
- Tân Hòa
- Vĩnh Thới
- Long Thắng
- Hòa Long:Hoa long commune is where the seat of Lai Vung district is based at Hoa Long town(aka Lai Vung town officially or in some documents, but if you say LaiVung town to a motor taxi, you will be brought to LaiVung town at Tan Thanh commune, which is like 8km further!), which locates on 2 wards: Long phu ward, [where Bun (rice vermicelli), hu tieu (rice noodle), banh trang(rice tortilla), banh tam (grained broken brown rice noodle) are mass-produced] and a part of Long thanh ward, where can trace to many star apple trees( milk fruit, or Vu Sua), and mango gardens can be found there in this ward as well. Hoa Long commune still has 2 more wards: Long Buu, and Long Hoi, where the seat of Hoa Long commune is at. This ward Long Buu is the center of Fish trap production (Dan Lo). Along the rice fields, Dien dien flowers are harvested in flood season(June, July), alongside mud carp and tiny prawns(tep, actually not so tiny, just small size but a lot) caught in great number along Hoa Long river(unit caught is in Gia, about 30kg), together they can form an excellent seasonal dish.In this area, there are Ca Na and Binh Bat, healthy fruits for fat reduction. Ca Na jam sticks taste superb. It is the derivation of Ho lo candy of China, but superior to Ho lo in taste and smell. Bang Lang and Mango young leaves are also ingredients of Banh Xeo's live salad side dish.
Natived to the area, O moi trees yield flowers which are much better than Sakura in my opinions. In rural swamps and ponds, wild lotus still thrives although it is getting less and less. Water lily is everywhere, and this is the base of another excellent sour vege salad, besides Dien dien flowers. Along the rivers, you can opt to buy the fresh wild-caught Freshwater giant prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii, or Tom cang xanh, blue claws shrimp). This is much better than getting them from farms and absolutely than frozen! Ideally, this specie is main material for Banh phong tom Sa Giang (prawn growing cracker) of Sadec city nearby. Additionally, Sadec city has one more unique attractive product: Bich Chi baby formula. This baby formula indeed can be used for any age from 1-100, it is made of brown rice wrap, and the nutritrious, glutinous, freshness level is unmatchable by any famous milk product.
- Tân Thành: here is the capital of Nem Laivung (fermented pork wrap, with many family factories rolling out Nem in dozen. Laivung town is the major town of this commune.
- Tân Phước:2 above communes were formerly of Phuoc Thanh commune, where LaiVung town is located at.
- Long Hậu:in this commune, along the Long Hau river, there are many boat builder hangars. It is local business of this commune. On the other side of this commune, tangerine(Quyt) and Mandarin Orange(Cam Sanh) growing is the major business here, while watermelon and corn growing yield serious output for export to HCMC and further by long-distance trucks (xe hang) along Interprovincial highway 8 all the way to Laivung town reaching as far as Tien riverbank.
- Tân Dương
- Hòa Thành
Long means Dragon. Nguyen Anh during his hard-time, chased by Nguyen Lu's naval force, has passed by this area. Sky is very beautiful in this area, at sunset or night time during the fullmoon period. Rainy season is no fun at all, very wet, and completely inky-dark as if the sky is falling with all those stormy gray clouds. Sometimes it is very scary plus thunderous lightning.
To summerize the confusion of locality names in this district, here are the clarification: District Lai Vung has a Tan Thanh commune, which in turn has a Lai Vung marketplace(downtown) (orderly decreasing in size and rank). District Lai Vung officially seats its power base at Lai Vung town, aka Hoa Long town(the bigger downtown marketplace of Hoa Long commune). Within Hoa Long commune, Hoa Long town occupies whole Long Phu Ward, and a part of Long Thanh Ward. Meanwhile, the Hoa Long commune's power base locates at its 4th ward, Long Hoi (namely Dragons' Convergence) to avoid the seat of District Lai Vung staying at the only town of the commune, Hoa Long town, as described. This office center results in the existence of a new marketplace to serve it, therefore Hoa Long commune has totally 2 marketplaces, the bigger downtown serving District Lai Vung's seat, and the smaller serving the Hoa Long commune's seat. The 3rd ward of Hoa Long commune is called Long Buu ward, it locates entirely along the Inter-Provincial Highway 80 towards Sadec city. It seems to have only 1 small hotel, the People's Committee Inn. It opens to public to serve the passengers of the Hoa Long long-range bus station just nearby.
