| | A. | It's a long history for the French, starts to unravel for them with World War II, Japanese invasion of Indochina. Interestingly, US aided Ho Chi Minh in WWII, fighting Japanese. In retaking VN no allied army available so Japanese helped administer it briefly post-surrender.
US backed France against Viet Minh in their war, 80% of cost (keep in mind how down Europe would be post-WWII) paid for by US.
Major French defeat in mountains--Dien Bien Phu 1954. French negotiated treaty within a year, withdrew.
US pressured south to establish republic, break treaty about going one path as a country, supported Southern Republic for decades.
As history, many points to be made for both the US, Europe and developing nations.
| Q. | First Indochina war what was the home front for Vietnam and USA like? | Related Search: History | | | Please gives sites, and no Wikipedia! I'd really like to know about the effects of the war on home front/ the roles of the women, and yeah
| | A. | The first modern day Indochina war involved the Viet-Minh and France. This occurred post WWII and ended with the French defeat in 1954. Duriung that time The US was only involved to the extent of monetary aide to France. This is not to say there was not any US personnel in country. There were a few US miltary acting as observers and US civilian pilots.
Little was actually known about Vietnam by the general public at the time. However, once US involvement escatated, so goes the public. The war was not readily accepted by the college age group more as the war dragged on.
I was 18 when I first went to Vietnam and 20 when I returned. At the time I was spat upon and called many derogatory names. I will never forget arriving at San Francisco and heading to a connecting flight to come home when a 5-6 year old came up and kicked me in the shin and called me a baby killer. The kid's parents were less than 5 feet away laughing and proding him to do it again. Had my stare been lethal, the kid would have been an instant orphan.
There are any number of web sites than give you any specific information. Also thier are a number of books. "Street Without Joy" can give you a detailed account of what the French did wrong.

| Q. | was the first indochina war the cause of Vietnam to split in two? | Related Search: History | | | basically, i dont want to get too technical.
| | A. | Basically, you do not have to get too technical. After the Vietnamese victory at Dien Bien Phu, the French could not control the north of Vietnam, the Vietnamese did control it, and it had already become the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The Vietnamese could not control the south of Vietnam, the French did, and were not about to leave immediately. Hoping to end the war (which had already gone on for 8 years) with a favourable settlement and achieve unification at some later date, the Vietnamese and the French allowed the division of the country into north and south on the basis that it would be temporary and later after elections could be united once again. The First Indochina War and the Geneva Accords were the cause of Vietnam to be split into two regions, not two countries. | | | |
| Q. | Can someone please explain the First Indochina War? | Related Search: History | | | I found summaries online though none of them seem to clearly explain how it ended or what precipitated the partitioning of the nation of Vietnam. If you can explain it in a couple sentences it would be greatly appreciated.

In the 1800's the French were doing some colonizing in the area of Vietnam.
Why?
Who the hell knows, they could have had half of America.
They moved in, became planters, living on fancy plantations, and treated the locals like slaves.
These French planters got fat rich, living like royalty.
The locals started wanting more out of life.
The French and Catholic Church with their democracy made them little more than cattle.
They really were treated that badly.
Human rights activists in France were even voicing their feeling, shock, and concern.
Then WWII and the spread of communism happened.
And to the locals, seemed to be a much better way of life than what they were living with the "democracy" of the French and the Catholic Church.
During World War II, the colony was administered by Vichy France and was under Japanese occupation.
Beginning in May of 1941, the Viet Minh, a communist army led by Ho Chi Minh, began a revolt against French rule known as the First Indochina War.
The war was fought in French Indochina from December 19, 1946, until August 1, 1954, between the French Union’s French Far East Expeditionary Corps, led by France and supported by Vietnamese National Army against the Việt Minh, led by Hồ Chí Minh.
Most of the fighting took place in Tonkin in Northern Vietnam, although the conflict engulfed the entire country and also extended into the neighboring French Indochina protectorates of Laos and Cambodia.
In Saigon, the anti-Communist State of Vietnam, led by former Emperor Bảo Đại, was granted independence in 1949. Following the Geneva Accord of 1954, the Viet Minh became the government of North Vietnam, although the Bảo Đại government continued to rule in the South.
