Q.How can I recover the extension of a filename?Related Search:
Other - Computers
Is there a way to recover a file extension? I have received a file, but it does not have an extension. I have a feeling it might be a graphic or CAD type. I have used trial and error, but cannot open the file. Is there any software that can analyse the file and tell me the proper extension or program that I can use to open it ? Thanks
A.With no extension there can be no direct association. So, you have to know exactly what the file's format is. You can only know this by either looking into the file and trying to figure it out or, easier, sending a note to the person who sent you the file asking what program created it and what format it's in. With that information you can determine if you can open the file or ask to have it re-sent in a format you can open. Even given that you find the appropriate information, you still can't directly associate a single file with no extension to a given program and if you could in general, you probably would not want to as there are many different types of files that don't have an extension. Open the proper program and then use the File | Open command in the program's menu to open the file(s) you need to open. Also, search the program to see if it has a default file extension and if so, rename the file in question with that file extension. One other alternative would be to run the program TrId against the file(s). TrId is a program that attempts to determine a file's type based on known formats. (To download Trld, try this site: [Link] /) When you don't know what a file's type is and have no clues about what program works with a file it can sometimes help to look into the file and perhaps find clues in the file contents. Often all you will see will be binary bytes which translate to random characters in most viewers; but now and again you can find some hints within the file. If all you want to see is what text might be in the file there is a free utility called "Peek" that can help. Peek installs as an extension to Windows Explorer. To use it you right click on a file name and select Peek from the pop-up menu. Then select the proper file type and Peek extracts text in the file to a temporary file and opens your text editor to view it. Peek can be obtained from: [Link] / Please be aware that Peek installation requires some knowledge of directories on your computer (and also some knowledge of machine code programming). Its installation routine is very basic and requires your help. It also may give erratic results on Windows XP. There's also another trick using MS WORD. If you have Microsoft Word is to open Word and then use the menu item File>Open. In the file type menu scroll down to where it says "Recover text from any file (*.*)" and select that item. Then, navigate to the file in question and select it. Word will go through the file and extract the text in it and present it to you as a new document. These steps are just drawn from a little personal experience and cannot be guaranteed to be accurate. I hope this has helped anyway.
