| Q. | Why do so many people on this board attack insurance companies for profiting? | Related Search: Politics | | | The question I typically see assumes that insurance companies make a choice between patients and profits.
But how can businesses survive if they operate in this manner?
Do restaurants choose between profits and diners? Do they serve rotten meat, just because they can buy it cheaper and make higher profits?
The benefit of profits is that pursuit of them breeds competition which drives down costs and increases quality.
The only time companies can provide bad service and stay in business is when government imposes laws to restrict competition.
Sound familiar? Current laws prevent insurance companies from selling policies across state lines. The result: higher premium prices.
Stiggo: Competition is key. You supported my point without meaning to. The artificial restriction of competition by government prohibits insurance companies from offering competing policies. The government FORCES them to cover certain treatments, and they therefore cannot tailor to the specific needs of customers.
Consider: Which industry contends with more government interference and restrictions - restaurants or health insurance...
| | A. | I work for an insurance company, so my company's profit is my bonus! LOL!
Now, more to the point of your question, in my opinion, attacks on the insurance industry are fair even though the reasons given are rarely accurate. While I don't work on the health insurance side of the business, I can assure you that insurance is painfully over-regulated. The regulation has one impact that you have not pointed out. It puts up barriers to enter the market. To even start a company, you must be approved by the state insurance commissioner. Every rate change is approved by the commissioner. The filings and other bureaucratic necessities regulated by the state are so onerous that immense staffs are necessary to comply. This tends to favor larger companies and weeds out smaller companies, so stifling innovation and competition.
All of this hasn't taken into account basic structural factors that lead the industry away from actual insurance into a quasi-socialized state in which all care passes through "insurance" and is paid for by employers. The tax code is primarily to blame though regulations lead to this result as well.
After all is said and done though, even in an unhindered market, insurances companies would drive to make a profit. I believe that you finely described the profit motive. I won't go into it beyond what you did besides to comment on scarcity. I read answers such as those from the first responder who write about "rationing". They seem to believe that if we took some certain courses of action that medical care (or whatever good or service the socialist is considering) would no longer be limited in supply. The reality is that medical care, like any natural resource, is a limited good. Profits (not just of insurance companies, but doctors and other providers) place control of that good into the hands of those most capable of providing it. Entrepreneurial profits are our only signal to tell us who is doing a good job.
| Q. | Is there any evidence to suggest a giant squid would attack a person like the mythical kraken does? | Related Search: Zoology | | | There are centuries old drawings of "krakens" attacking boats and the crews on board. The Humboldt squid had attacked people only because they were being heavily fished and dying in the area. These squid live too deep in the ocean for human interaction, but say it comes up to the surface at night. Would a giant squid or even the colossal squid attack a person?
| | A. | I don't see any reason why a giant squid or colossal squid would pass up the opportunity to chow down on a tasty meal-sized package like a human should they encounter one. Especially since humans don't swim very quickly or have any other defensive adaptations to protect them from giant squid.
Since most cephalopods are insatiably curious and also active predators, I'd be more surprised if they didn't try to take a bite if they could.
So we're probably very lucky that these critters seem to stay in the ocean depths, and don't come up to the surface at night.
| Q. | how to attack the ridge board of a flat roof shed to a brick wall? | Related Search: Do It Yourself (DIY) | | | want to replace the shed that is attached to my house. The entire roof needs to be replace and i want to raise the rideg board to give a higher slope to the rafters since im using 2x6. Are 2x6 good for this project the dimensions are 60''x138'' and 8ft hight the pitch is 2/12 and the ridgeboard would be 118'' high.
also should i wrap the sheathing on the outside wall w/ insulation if i wanna stucco the wall and any other good outside covering ideas
| | A. | I would fasten the ridge board to the brick with wedge anchors. I would use 3/8" diameter by 3-1/2" long. Snap a line at the bottom of where your ridge board will go. Then mark where your holes will go in the wood. Drill holes in wood with a spade bit just a little larger than your anchor so they will slide through ridge board easily. Drill correct size hole into brick by inserting bit through the hole in the board. Put one anchor at each end, and then fill in every 4' on center. 2" x 6" rafters are fine if you put them on 16" centers, also use 5/8" o.s.b. roof decking.
You have several choices on the exterior. Just make it look good.

| Q. | How do you prevent an anxiety attack while waiting for people to board an airplane? | Related Search: Air Travel | | | I an flying to VA in less than one week, i have no problem with flying but i do have a problem with waiting for people to board the plane. I like to just get on and go, and i feel that waiting for people to board, i will get freaked out and want to run off the plane, mind you, i have not flown since i was 4 years old and i am now 22. If you have any advice, please share with me. Thanks.
| | A. | Very simple, wait until everyone boards the plane and go last. You can also go sit at the bar or go to the restroom and wait for the announcement for final boarding. You have a boarding pass with an assigned seat. It doesn't matter when you board. Just take a small carry on. Make sure you have check-in luggage. Take your time to board. Now days, they can't take off without a passenger who has checked-in luggage. The airline must wait for you or take your luggage off. Guess what they will do while they wait for you. Let's hope your luggage is not in the front of the compartment. However, I'm not advocating for you to stall everyone on the plane. Just take your time and board last. Do you get an anxiety attack while getting off the plane too? If yes, fly first class or have a drink when the plane lands. You can buy a volka tonic when they serve drinks. Drink the tonic and don't open the volka bottle. Wait until the plane touches ground. Drink the volka straight and you will be fine.
Enjoy your trip. | | | |
| Q. | In the board game RISK Can you attack a country move all your men into that country and attack again? | Related Search: Board Games | | | Can you attack move your men into that country attack again and keep doing it all on the same turn? because if you can that would make the game pretty stupid
| | A. | You can only move the troops you attacked with, and you do have to leave some behind, then you can continue and attack the next country, if you want to spread out your troops thinly and have a giant army tear through your single troops. | | | |
| Q. | Other than one song sung in jest, what proof is there that McCain will attack Iran? | Related Search: Elections | | | I've seen several posts on various message boards by people saying McCain will attack Iran. When has he ever SERIOUSLY said that was an option, little less a priority or liklihood?
| | A. | I always get a kick out of that too. I find it intrinsically funny when people call him a "war-monger". I'm sure you will get a response from some knucklehead mis-quoting his comment about the possibility of maintaing a military presence in Iraq for 100 years. I guess all these people still think we are at war with Germany since we have a base there. | | | |
