Q.Why did the Bahai Religion shorten Rammadhan so much?Related Search:
Religion & Spirituality
I forgot which of the prophets did it but one of them shortened it to the original lunar month about 30 days to 19 days using the Bahai Calendar, which I also forgot the name of. I'm very interested with Bahai because, at this point I have this mesh of Abrahamic Religions like I keep the Torah and I'm fasting for Rammadhan and I feel that the Bahai Faith is pretty cool. But why would it Rammadhanic-type fast be shortened by close to half. I have no problem with a movement of when this type of fast is made but why so much shorter? Also a slightly off-topic but where can I find the Bahai main prayers, the ones that you're supposed to say 3 times a day, the long one and the short one which I believe is said once a day.
A.I'll be happy to answer all your questions. 1. The Baha'i calendar is called the "Badí" Calendar (badí means "wonderful"). It is a solar calendar, not a lunar calendar like the Muslim calendar. The start date has been fixed so that the Baha'i new year, Naw Ruz, is always on the same Gregorian day--March 21-- even though the vernal equinox may occur on March 20, 21, or 22. 2. The Badí calendar was implemented by the Bab and confirmed by Baha'u'llah. I believe the Bab set its terms in the Persian Bayan, although I am not sure. 3. Baha'i months are all 19 days long. It breaks up the year into a nice neat pattern of 19 days of 19 months; the leftover 4-5 days are called Ayyam-i-Ha, or Intercalary Days. They are used as a period of celebration and festivity in preparation for fasting which occurs immediately after Ayyam-i-Ha. The 19-day month is the reason why Baha'is fast for only 19 days, as the fast is for the entire month Ala (the last month of the year, March 2-20). I found a neat article (linked below) that explains why the Bab chose the number 19 for His calendar. I'd never known that before today and it's pretty fascinating. 4. You can find a large repository of prayers at [Link]  (also linked below) under the heading "Obligatory Prayers". It includes the 3 Obligatory Prayers you are asking about. Each individual can choose which prayer to use--he or she does not have to recite all 3 every day, and can choose a different one at any time depending on mood. The Long Obligatory Prayer must be said at least once every 24 hours, but there is no specific time of day specified. The Medium Obligatory prayer is to be said 3 times a day at "morning", "noon", and "evening" (respectively: the intervals between sunrise and noon, between noon and sunset, and from sunset until two hours after sunset). The Short obligatory prayer is once a day at "noon" (again, between noon and sunset). I hope this information is helpful!
