Q.How does a fully automatic firearm work?Related Search:

How exactly does a fully-automatic firearm work? Do they use hammers? If so, how is the hammer cocked? sorry, that's how is the hammer *repositioned*. Answers blocked out the correct terminology. Any kind of action, bolt, or hammer type - choose any fully automatic, preferably light and non-mounted (m16? ak?). I've googled it and couldn't come up w/anything.
A.I will try to tell you the best that I remember... It's been a while since I've read anything about full autos, but I figure I can give you a better answer than what you've got so far. Open bolt automatic machine guns do not use hammers. The firing pin is fixed to the bolt so that when the bolt goes forward it simultaneously chambers the round and fires it and then the bolt blows back from the pressure of the cartridge being ignited and it does this all over again until the trigger is released. When the trigger is released the sear will catch the bolt and stop the gun from firing. The bolt will remain in the opened position and not go forward, hence the term "open bolt" Modern assault rifles (such as the AK-47 and M16) and some machine guns, however, do not use an open bolt. They function similarly to a semi-automatic closed bolt firearm only they have an auto sear. When the selector switch is placed in automatic mode and the trigger is pulled the disconnect will no longer hold the hammer until the trigger is released. The bolt trips the auto sear as soon as a round is chambered, which in turn lets the hammer down on the firing pin at the right time. Without the auto sear the hammer would go down immediately and attempt to fire the round before it is chambered. This could be extremely dangerous and make the gun explode or it may just jam the firearm because the hammer won't hit the firing pin hard enough to detonate the round.

Q.Is it possible to own a post 1986 automatic firearm without working for the government?Related Search:
Law & Ethics
The Firearm Owners Protection act of 1986 prohibits civilians from possessing full-auto firearms manufactured after May 19, 1986. at least this is my understanding.
A.You need a class III firearms permit, full auto is illegal to posess unless you have the class III permit because you have to pay taxes on the sear in the firearm that is what makes it full auto in the first place. Your record had better be pretty well spotless to obtain the permit. Here is a good place to answer you truthfully and more accurately.  Would I be able to go buy a full-auto AK47 or M16?
A.There are currently 37 states here in the U.S. that allow the possession of automatic weapons. The requirements are that you submit an application to BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco &, Firearms & Explosives. As part of that application a complete criminal background investigation is done and you must submit a set of current fingerprints as part of the process.(Finger Prints fee's vary from $15-$20 depending on the state of residence) Once approved, you will be required to pay a one-time fee of $200 for a Federal Tax Stamp per weapon (There are NO, REPEAT NO additional FEE'S,Dealer's Licenses or anything additional required!!) With the GCA of 1986 (Gun Control Act) Civilians are not allowed to posess fully automatic weapons unless they were manufactured prior to 1986. The weapons manufactured before 1986 are "Grandfathered" meaning they can still be LEGALLY transfered thru a licensed/bonded Class III NFA Weapons Dealer.NO fully automatic weapons made after 1968 are legal for civilians to own or possess. In addition the permit once issued requires that the permit be with the registered licensed weapon at all times and especially when transported. You must also show proof that the registered weapon is stored in a safe or locked container that meets BATFE guidelines. Issuing the Permit also allows BATFE to make a personal inspection of your residence or storage area once annually.(Usually announced prior by appointment) Several states have their own state restrictions or laws of ownership for these weapons and a person who is licensed with the weapon is subject to the state laws of any state he visits or may travel thru. If you can find a grandfathered AK-47 or M-16 you can technically purchase it but they are extremely rare and quite expensive......You would be better suited to pick something easier to obtain

explosives, incindiaries and non hand held weapons are not allowed. It must be a rifle and/or pistol. I myself would line as many up as I could with a .50 Calibre BMG rifle and blow through them. Ok, as another rule, you cannot line them up, they are people trapped in a 100yd x 100yd field and are allowed to run, duck jump or whatever they can realistically do. I would still choose the .50 Cal. How about you?
A.the one Neo uses in the lobby scene from the movie, the matrix.you can run but you can't hide b*tches!!*fyi:it's my evil alter-ego,not me*

An automatic firearm is a firearm that automatically extracts and ejects the fired cartridge case, and loads a new case, usually through the energy of the fired round. The term can be used to refer to semi-automatic firearms, which fire one shot per pull of the trigger, or fully automatic firearms, which will continue to load and fire ammunition until the trigger (or other activating device) is released or until the ammunition is exhausted. An "automatic pistol" or an "automatic shotgun" generally refers to a semi-automatic design, while "automatic rifle" more often means a fully automatic or selective fire design.

Fully automatic weapons tend to be restricted to military and police organizations in most developed countries. In the United States, machine guns registered after 1986 have been off the public market since the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, though on April 21, 2008, Governor Kathleen Sebelius signed a bill allowing the sale and possession of NFA weapons in Kansas. The law took effect on July 1, 2008.[1][2]

See Gun politics for more information.

Fully automatic firearms are covered in these articles:

Other similar designs not usually classified as automatic firearms are:

  • Autocannon, which are 20 mm in bore diameter or larger and thus considered cannons, not small arms.
  • Gatling guns, multi-barrelled bolt-action designs, often used with external power supplies to generate rates of fire higher than automatic firearms.

Similar in appearance but not able to fire in full-auto mode are some semi-automatic rifles. The visual similarity has led to the public usage of the term assault weapon to describe some semi-automatic weapons (as opposed to the military usage of the term).
