| Q. | Differences between American and Canadian Journalism? | Related Search: Vancouver | | | I am a recent American college graduate, and I have a degree in journalism. I am thinking about working abroad in Canada for several months, and I was wondering what are the differences between American and Canadian journalism? I would like to find something in print media or prublic relations in Canada, especially in Vancouver or Toronto, but I realize this is unrealistic since I have no work experience and because I'm not from Canada. Also, how difficult is it to get an entry-level reporting job in the media in Canada? How difficult is it to get a job in public relations, and would the skills an American journalist has translate well in the Canadian market?
| | A. | Canadian journalism is quite different. We don't spend quite the amount of time talking about war and terrorist and gangs. We have other things in the new. Go online to [Link] , check [Link] (major news papers across the country). This is one way you could check different papers and get an idea. The globe and mail is a major national one. The journalism market is very competitive. I collected stats for several programs at a college and journalism was one of the least successful programs. It seemed that most people who were working in the field were working part time for small town papers. I did a practicum for the Calgary Sun and it seemed that most of the reporters had been there a very long time. The only jobs I ever saw were for things like I did in the library, doing research and scanning the paper for online use. For jobs you should check Canada.com, probably the individual papers on it, workopolis.ca, and monster.ca. This would be where you would see PR jobs which would be more in Toronto and Vancouver. | | | |
| Q. | What does Yellow Journalism have to do with the Spanish-American war? | Related Search: History | | | What does Yellow Journalism have to do with the Spanish- American War and Cuba?
| | A. | Known as a"splendid little war" the Spanish-American War was a short conflict with only 118 days of combat spread over a year's time. American losses in combat were only 400 men. (However, more the 5,000 would die from disease)
The conflict was brought on partly due to "Yellow Journalism." William Randolph Hearst, publisher of the New York Journal, sent Frederick Remmington to report on the condition of the Cuban people. Remmington, faced with the reality that there wasn't a rebellion wired Hearst asking permission to return to New York He wrote: "Everything quiet, no trouble here. There will be no war. I wish to return." Hearst replied with the now famous line: "You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war." At that time newspaper stories were similar to those seen at supermarket checkout lines.
The inncident that lead to the war was the sinking of the Battleship "Maine" in Hanvanna Harbor. On 15 February,t e ship suddenly exploded and sank. Investigators concluded that a external mine had been placed under the ship. Later investigatins, after the war reached the same conclusion. Howver, recent reviews support the theory that the explosion was internal and an accident. Needless to say the papers played up that the Spanish had bombed the ship.
Many of the newsreel films of the war were actually miniatures shot on Thomas Edison's studio in New Jersey. | | | |
