Q.HELP! Desparate! What should 70 year young widower pick to throw out in a major home cleanup?Related Search:
Personal Finance
I am truly overwhelmed! 1000s of pages/files - unsorted bills and account statements go back twenty years. Do I need to keep all IRA statements for tax purposes? Can I risk just shredding mail w/o opening if it is 0 to 10 years old? Same with all those insurance letters from Medicare and Blue Cross? What about: Memorabilia that I have not looked at in O to 50 years? Old mortgages, GI and VA records, college records and papers, computer discs, hundred of magazines, articles, books, videos? Compute parts, cables, discs? Must I sort magazines and books so I can give them to a library or is it OK to send them to recycle? Throw books away instead of selling or donating? I have a huge problem. I have not opened much of my mail in five years and have a half dozen unread subscription mags too that are piled up. Lots of other things too, but the paper is the worst and not getting better. I have read dozens books on organizing and gotten advice, but it is not helping. My life is a MESS!
A.Hi don't worry you can sort this out. I know someone dearly who reminds me of you. He had not opened some of his mail for years, he just looked at the return addresses on the envelopes and thought that some of it was junk (insurance stuff etc) so didn't open it. However things came to a head one day and I offered to take this paperwork off him and work through it. To my surprise there were some uncashed cheques there from nearly 10 years ago amounting to over £1000. I was gobsmacked! I contacted the co's who sent the cheques and luckily got them re-issued and made sure they went into his account. There were also letters there regarding council action that may be taken to his house (as the garden was a bit of mess too) which could have resulted in compulsory purchase and he would have lost everything. Procrastination is one of the worst faults and you must sort it out NOW!! Ask yourself - do you really need all these magazines and books? Probably not, especially if you don't have time to read them no matter how you think you would enjoy the subject matter, so then just throw them out. Do it, don't worry about giving them to charity or selling them, because that is just another worry for you, which you don't need!!. All these things and this mess that you're in is a drain on your life - your life is the most important thing and your peace of mind so just throw them out - don't think twice just do it. Regarding other paperwork such as insurance etc, first of all file it all in a ring binder under each item and in date order. Then once organised decide if you really still need to keep the ones from ten years ago cos you probably don't, even your pension statements etc you should only need the most recent ones cos these are the ones that are currently valid. You would only need to keep old ones if you have a dispute with the company over something. Regards the old computer parts, cables and discs etc then again if you are not using them now or have not used them in the last year then throw them out - why clutter up your life like this. Plus technology moves on so quick that they're probably obselete anyway now and the equipment they fit is outdated. I don't know what you're discs are but if they are music CD's then you may wish to keep some of them only if you like the music otherwise you could upload them onto your computer and keep them on there instead. Regards your account statements from 20 years ago you don't need to keep these. I would recommend only keep for the past 5 years only. However, a really good option for you to give you peace of mind in this issue is that you get a scanner for your computer if you don't already have one. Then you can scan these statements and bills onto your PC for your peace of mind and they will always be there if you need them but won't be piles of papers everywhere. A scanner can cost only £30 and is worth it if this is a worry to you. Good luck to you and please start to sort this mess out today, even if you just dedicate 1 hour a day to it then you will get your life sorted out and feel liberated rather than chained to all this paperwork and possessions.

Q.Why are some web pages not loading?Related Search:
Other - Internet
A little while ago I used disk cleanup to free some space as my computer seemed to be a bit bogged down. I also deleted the browsing history. Now when I try to go to some pages - facebook, ebay, aol mail - the pages won't load. Ebay will load part of the way, but the graphics are non-existent. It also takes ages to get to that point and I can go no further. What do I need to be checking? I've already tried re-starting the computer, the modem, and the internet connection. I've reset the network adapter too. Now I'm lost. I'm using a Packard Bell running Windows Vista and IE7. just so I get no more asinine aswers like the first one, the PC to which I am referring is NOT wireless, it is plugged into the modem router. Also, some pages (Yahoo, google, any yahoo pages like sports and news) load fine while others named above do not.

Q.Need help with Internet Explorer not closing?Related Search:
Other - Internet
I have been having issues today with my Internet Explorer not closing properly. When I click the X at the right corner to close it, the page goes white, but it still shows the tab with the last website I visited and will not close unless I do control + alt + del and end the program. What is causing this? I tried doing a disk cleanup and degrag, but this didn't help. Any thoughts?
A.When something like that happens, it usually means one or more files within the program have been corrupted. Your best bet would be to back up your favorites, and re-install internet explorer. Better yet, get firefox, it's faster, safer, and easy to use. Best of all, it's open source, 100% free. Go that route and you save yourself a lot of headaches.

Q.I need help with these pop-ups that keeps making home page perfectedsecurity.com. What do I do?Related Search:

It's probably spyware software that needs continuous cleanup.
A.Click the links at the bottom of my post and download the following FREE software: 1) Ad-aware 2) Spybot 1.4 3) Bazooka Adware Scanner 4) SpywareBlaster Step 1) Install all of the software Step 2) Run Bazooka scanner and be sure to update its "definitions" before scanning. It will (usually) tell you what spyware is on your system. Plus, it will give detailed explainations of how to removed it (if ad-aware or spybot don't work). Step 3) Run Ad-aware and Spybot to remove the spyware/adware. Step 4) Open up IE and click Tools > Internet Options. Manually type in the web address of the Web site you'd like as your homepage. Step 5) Start spywareblaster, download the updated definitions, and enable full protection for all items. Then, click Tools > Misc. IE Settings > and tick the little box that says "Disable the Homepage Settings etc..." This will prevent little aps from changing your homepage in the first place. Also, you may want to look into getting a software firewall. The built-in XP firewall is not that great, and hardly ever blocks spyware. Even something as basic as ZoneAlarm free version is better than nothing. If you're going to buy something, I recommend the Look'n'Stop software firewall. Independant reviews rate it one of the best firewalls, and it's so light on system resources that you barely notice it's running. Use Firefox too, as one of the other posters recommended. It's a lot less likely to get infected than IE. But since we all know that a full switch to Firefox is still a good ways away, it's best to arm yourself with the tools to keep IE running as smooth as possible. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact me via e-mail by clicking on my name.

Q.Yahoo! search reults in Error 999 page.HELP!!?Related Search:
Security
Have been recvng for > 2 wks. Can access most of Yahoo! srvcs. but search either gets Error999 or "bogus" search results leading to places like monstermktplace, other search pages. etc. and goes on for infinity w/o going to actual site searched for. Use Norton IS/AV and have trial of AVG AntiSpy. Some issues found and either cleaned/quarantined, but still unable to search. Other engines get me bogus search result pages also. Told I need a geek to do TOTAL cleanup and reload of windows, etc. Also, ??? has turned off updates and scheduled scans, and I keep having to go turn them back on. What say You??? *****PS***** AVG had to be remote loaded by IS provider as when I went to the AVG website (using round about ways provided by my provider), wouldn't let me download from my side, page just kept refreshing.
A.Have you tried a system restore to a time you know your PC was not giving you the error. This is probably the easiest solution. Reboot your PC and tap the F8 key. When the options come up choose 'safe mode'. Once in safe mode click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Make your choice of day and try and use a System Scheduled Restore Point. I hope this helps
