Q.Colleges in Ontario?Related Search:
Other - Canada
I'm an American High School 12th grader looking to possibly go to college in Ontario. I just wanted to know out of these schools which ones you would recommend I look into.I am in the IB program and my grades are good for school, but my IB test grades aren't so great and there is a good chance that I will not get the IB diploma. Here is the list: Ontario Algoma University Brescia University College Brock University Carleton University University of Guelph Huron University College King's University College at The University of Western Ontario Lakehead University Laurentian University of Sudbury McMaster University Nipissing University University of Ottawa Queen's University Redeemer University College Ryerson University Saint Paul University St. Jerome's University University of St. Michael's College University of Sudbury University of Toronto Trent University University of Trinity College Victoria University University of Waterloo The University of Western Ontario Wilfrid Laurier University University of Windsor York University Thanks!!!
A.It really depends on what you want to go into, and what sort or experience you're looking for (class sizes, the city it's located in ect ect.) I'm going to Mcmaster this September and McMaster's known for thier Health Sci program and any sort of science-y program. I really like McMaster's campus. University of Toronto is made out to be "the best" but it's supposed to be really tough for a degree you can get at any other university. I have a friend who has to sometime take the subway to get from one class to another. UotT is very large and competitive and living in Toronto is quite expensive. I know Waterloo is good if you want to do co-op. York is known for the fine arts programs. Western is also known for thier med school program. But yeah, if you tell me what program you're looking into or where you'd like to live I could give you more info.

Q.About Library or Student Photo ID cards?Related Search:
Drawing & Illustration
I am a student at Algoma University, located in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. Like most other small to mid-sized universities, Algoma students are expected to carry identification cards with their pictures on them in order to be able to take out books. Anyhow, I heard that in the late 60s, there was a movement among academics and students alike to protest this, and at least one professor attempted to check out books without a student ID card kept on taking books up to the front desk, and when the librarian refused to check them out, he would go collect more books and bring them to the front desk, continuing this cycle. Eventually, he got fired, taken to court, and fined. My question is this: I haven't heard much about this movement these days, and I was just wondering whether or not this still exists, and, most importantly, why they were protesting photo ID cards for libraries and students. Any resources (web sites, books, scholarly articles) on the subject would be appreciated. What about the nazis, they always asked for identification papers too. Everywhere you go, it was like, "Papers, let me see your papers, identification, pelase.
A.not sure about canada, but for students here, it is for easy identification. this is identification for book being checked out, getting into any dorm or school facility, and for easy identification in case of death (like dog tags). I believe the photo ID is a good idea, and trust me ten years down the road you will get a kick out of your old school id pictures.

Algoma University (AU) is a postsecondary institution in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, offering undergraduate university degrees in more than 30 academic programs. The student population has increased substantially in recent years and Algoma now has about 1200 students.

From its founding in 1967 until June 18, 2008, Algoma was an affiliated college of Laurentian University in Sudbury, and was officially known as Algoma University College. The Algoma University mission is to offer an exceptional undergraduate education.

[edit] History

On the site of a former Anishnabek residential school, Algoma College officially opened in September 1967. Initially its program was limited to the first year of studies for both the Bachelor of Arts, and the Bachelor of Science degree programs. It wasn't until 1972 that the college offered the entire three-year program.

Algoma's independence from Laurentian University was first proposed in 1994. The original proposal would have seen the school renamed Shingwauk University, but was not ultimately pursued by the MTCU.

On May 31, 2007, the government of Ontario announced that it would introduce legislation to charter Algoma as a fully independent university. After the government passed the Algoma University Act, it was given royal assent by David Onley, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, on June 18, 2008.[1] Nipissing University in North Bay, also formerly an affiliated college of Laurentian, similarly received status as an independent university in 1992.

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig will be the name of a new federated institution dedicated to Anishnaabe education.

[edit] Programs

Algoma provides 30 plus programs - three and four year Bachelor's degrees in disciplines such as English, history, psychology, sociology, biology, business, computer science and fine arts. The Master of Computer Games Technology program is offered in conjunction with the University of Abertay Dundee, Scotland.

[edit] Partnerships

The Algoma Conservatory of Music, which offers music lessons to about 1000 students in the community has a working relationship with AU. Concurrently with AU's charter as an independent university, Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (University), an Anishinaabe cultural and linguistic federated school is poised to open in the fall of 2008.[2]

While Algoma does not currently offer any full joint programs with Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, students at both institutions may register for some courses at the other school as credit toward their degrees from their home institutions.

The university has diploma-to-degree agreements with Cambrian College, Confederation College, George Brown College, Humber College, Mohawk College, Northern College, Sheridan College, Sault College and Seneca College, as well as a student exchange agreement with the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.[3]

[edit] Buildings and features

The university has a sports centre, the George Leach Centre, which has a 200 metre indoor track as well as numerous basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, and exercise facilities. A new integrated technologies building recently opened in 2005, which houses a new cafeteria, student centre, and student pub named 'The Speak Easy'.

In 1975 the college purchased Shingwauk Hall, the building that housed the aforementioned residential school, and 37 acres (150,000 m2) of land including property along the St. Mary's River front. In 1989 the Arthur A. Wishart library opened, followed by expansion in 1992 with the opening of the George Leach Centre. Student residence buildings were constructed in 1995 and later expanded in 2001.

2005 was a significant year for the school, as a $6 million technology wing saw expansion unprecedented in the school's young past. Included in the wing are state-of-the-art technology and computer labs, the 'Great West Life Amphitheatre' (a 250+ seat lecture hall), a new student centre, cafeteria, faculty offices, a bookstore and campus shop, and a new pub.[4]

In 2009 Algoma University received more than $16 million to build a Bioscience and Technology Convergence Centre. Ground was broken for the new building in September 2009.[5]

[edit] Student life

The university's student newspaper is The Sentient. The university does not currently have a campus radio station, although several students and faculty participate in the production of Thunderbird Six, a series of podcasts about the university. Some individual Algoma students have also volunteered for WLSO, the college radio station of Lake Superior State University. The students are represented by the Algoma University Students' Union known as AUSU

The university also publishes an annual literary journal, Algoma Ink.
