Which is better: OneWorld, SkyTeam, or Star Alliance. Which is better if i only plan to travel for leisure and want comfortable flights with decent pricing?
A.I'd say Star Alliance, just because of the worldwide network they cover. Air New Zealand is one of the best airlines out there for comfort and service and have decent pricing as well, along with Singapore Airlines [Link]

Q.Can I you my Northwest Airlines worldperks miles on a alliance airline?Related Search:

Northwest Airlines is part of skyteam can i use my mile on an other airline in skyteam?
A.Yes, you can go online and use your miles on codeshare flights (flights with NW code) but last time I had to call airline to fly on partern airline code. Try it at [Link]  and if you can't find the right flight call them.

Q.are there other ways to get frequent flier miles without booking with a star alliance airline, etc?Related Search:

hi, I'm planning to fly to malaysia in january from canada, so I think I could get a lot of frequent flier miles from something like that, but when I looked on the united airlines website, I have a mileage member card with them, but their flights are like a thousand dollars more than other ones I've found. Is there a way to earn miles if I booked off a website like expedia or kayak, etc....so I could save myself a lot of money?
A.You can still earn miles without booking directly with United Airlines. Just make sure, though, that you will take Star Alliance member airlines. If you find UA's tickets expensive, then try the other Star Alliance member carriers like (for your route from Canada to Malaysia) Air Canada, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Asiana Airlines. They are all Star Alliance members and all your flights would earn miles which can be credited to your Mileage Plus account with United. You just have to build your itinerary in such a way that you will pass through the hub cities of these carriers. For example, if you're located in interior Canada (which means any city other than the Pacific gateway, which is Vancouver), then take Air Canada from that interior point to Vancouver, then take Air Canada again to Seoul, then take Asiana Airlines to Kuala Lumpur. Voila! All your flights are on Star Alliance members and you can be assured that you'd have mileage credit for all of them. Another itinerary could be from interior Canada to Vancouver on Air Canada, Vancouver to Tokyo on Air Canada, then Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur on All Nippon Airways. Just make sure that you quote your Mileage Plus number to your travel agent or to the check-in agent at the airport so that all your flights can be tracked by the Star Alliance Intranet Web.

the best airline anyoe can answer will be given credit for best answer :) just want to compare i man see if someone likes my favorite the Lufthansa German Airlines AG
A.Lufthansa is one of the best. I like Air New Zealand. And I fly domestically in the US a lot and find that USAirways is decent (far better than they were a couple years ago even). I fly their shuttle from Boston-Washington at least once a week and I love it. The only airline that I refuse to fly, though, is United. Which sucks for them because I fly to Chicago and California a lot as well, and they have lost a LOT of money by pissing me off. So usually I go with American Airlines (not a Star Alliance) to those places.

A.With SA, you go direct from USA to South-Africa, it is more direct but SA is usually expensive, altough excellent service. With AA or BA you will always go through the LHR/London in the UK, then direct south. Go to [Link]  and ask the question in the proper forum. They may give you some more insight. One more to think about: skyteam.com, as DL/Delta is now flying to Africa! from ATL/Atlanta and JFK/New York.

Q.A fourth airline alliance?Related Search:

Do you think there will be another airline alliance following star alliance, skyteam and oneworld in the future?
A.No, because you are going to see airline consolidation happening in the next few years. The carriers will all have to start merging together to survive. There are going to be less carriers, thus there will not be a need for another airline alliance to be started.

Q.Does anyone know what standards an airline has to maintain to be a Oneworld alliance member?Related Search:

I am a gold member of Malev which is in the Oneworld alliance. I have noticed that the service between destinations Malev flies in not consistent. For instance, I took a recent trip to Amsterdam from Budapest, aproximately 1-1/2 hours flight and there was full beverage service. However, on similar length flights to Pristina, Kosovo and Tirana, Albania, with similar equipment there was no beverage service. Why the inconsistency? Does anyone know the answer?
A.The OneWorld Alliance, as with any other airline alliance, is mainly a financial alliance. There are really no operational commonalities that alliance members have to maintain. For example, on a Northwest Airlines flight from Detroit to Las Vegas, they serve one drink to each passenger and additional snacks to first class. On the equivalent flight on Continental Airlines, they serve at minimum a snack and drink to everyone on board, in addition to a meal in first class (this was as of last year from what I recall). Honestly, the financial state of airlines changes monthly or even weekly. Management is responsible for deciding whether or not to have a food and beverage service on board flights. It changes frequently. One week, you might get a drink, and another week, you might get nothing. It also depends on the airline, regardless of whether or not they are an alliance member.

An airline alliance is an agreement between two or more airlines to cooperate on a substantial level. The three largest alliances are the Star Alliance, SkyTeam and Oneworld. Alliances also form between cargo airlines, such as that of WOW Alliance, SkyTeam Cargo and ANA/UPS Alliance. Alliances provide a network of connectivity and convenience for international passengers and international packages.

[edit] Benefits and costs

Benefits can consist of:

  • An extended and optimized network: this is often realised through code sharing agreements. Many alliances started as only a code sharing network.
  • Cost reduction from sharing of:
    • Sales offices
    • Maintenance facilities
    • Operational facilities, e.g. catering or computer systems.
    • Operational staff, e.g. ground handling personnel, at check-in and boarding desks.
    • Investments and purchases, e.g. in order to negotiate extra volume discounts.
  • Traveler benefits can include:
    • Lower prices due to lowered operational costs for a given route.
    • More departure times to choose from on a given route.
    • More destinations within easy reach.
    • Shorter travel times as a result of optimised transfers.
    • A wider range of airport lounges shared with alliance members
    • Faster mileage rewards by earning miles for a single account on several different carriers.
    • Round-the-world tickets, enabling travelers to fly over the world for a relatively low price.

Airline alliances may also create disadvantages for the traveler, such as:

  • Higher prices when all competition is erased on a certain route.
  • Less frequent flights, for instance when two airlines fly each three times a day on a given route, the alliance might fly only four times on the same route (this might be especially true between cities that are hubs for each airline, e.g., flights between Detroit, where Northwest has a fortress hub, and Amsterdam, where KLM has a fortress hub).

[edit] Hurdles

The ability of an airline to join an alliance is often restricted by laws and regulations or subject to approval by authorities. Antitrust laws play a large role.

Landing rights may not be owned by the airlines themselves but by the nation in which their head office resides. If an airline loses its national identity by merging to a large extent with a foreign company, existing agreements may be declared void by a country which objects to the merger.

The first airline alliance started in the 1930s, when Pan American Grace Airways and parent company Pan American World Airways agreed to exchange routes to Latin America. The first large alliance which is still functioning started in 1989, when Northwest and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines agreed to code sharing on a large scale. A huge step was taken in 1992 when The Netherlands signed the first open skies agreement with the United States, in spite of objections from the European Union authorities. This gave both countries unrestricted landing rights on each others' soil. Normally landing rights are granted for a fixed number of flights per week to a fixed destination. Each adjustment takes negotiating, often between governments rather than between the companies involved. The United States was so pleased with the independent position that the Dutch took versus the E.U. that it granted anti-trust immunity to the alliance between Northwest and KLM. Other alliances would struggle for years to overcome transnational barriers or still do so. An alliance of Arab airline companies will be launched in 2008 and is to be called Arabesk, it will be the fourth global alliance.

Airline Alliance Market Share By Network Capacity 2007

[edit] Notes

  • In 2005, SkyTeam launched its Associate Program, whereby existing codeshare alliances (such as Continental and Copa) can be integrated into SkyTeam's marketing (shared loyalty programs, etc.) [3]PDF.
  • Network strengths are continents or regions where listed airlines have one or more hubs or a major presence in several destinations.
  • Network weaknesses are continents or regions with no hubs and few (if any) flights for any airline in the alliance.
  • On June 19, 2008, Continental announced that it would be leaving SkyTeam and to join Star Alliance as part of a codesharing agreement with Star Alliance charter member United Airlines (Continental will cut its codeshare ties to Delta and Northwest). No specific dates were announced for the switch. [4]
  • As the table shows, the three alliances combined fly 60.8% of all passengers.
