| Q. | Why is Malaysia and Singapore doing so much better than Indonesia? | Related Search: Other - Politics & Government | | | These are the same people, Malayan and Chinese, However, Indonesia is by far lagging behind in providing welfare for its people. It is such a difference walking around in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore compared to Jakarta, Surabaya or Makassar. It is the dirt, the lack of services, the quality of the museums and public services in general, the restaurants, the cafés. Could the way of government cause the difference? Indonesia experienced a dictatorship for 33 years with numerous victims. During that period, and even now, the role of the army is supreme. Corruption has expanded without any check. There was hardly a critical press. There has been decent changes of government in both Malaysia and Singapore without the shedding of blood. Neither Malaysia nor Singapore have gone to the extent of invading and occupying neighbouring states like Indonesia did in 1962 with West Papua and in 1975 with Portuguese Timor. Maybe also education is a factor.
| | A. | Education is the factor - for a people to escape the cycle of poverty.
According to Paul Collier, the factors that trap a country into poverty are: civil war (Indonesia had Banda Aceh), the "resource curse" (Indonesia's lumber), landlocked (not a factor for Indonesia), and bad governance (Indonesia's military).

| Q. | The Islamic world had cordial relations with the United States up until the 1970s. What changed? | Related Search: Politics | | | The Islamic world had cordial relations with the United States up until the 1970s. For example, during the Cold War, Pakistan sided with the USA (it had defence treaties with the USA), while predominantly Hindu India had a treaty of friendship with the USSR. Eisenhower was greatly admired throughout the Arab world for his diplomatic intervention in the Suez Canal crisis. The USA supplied arms and weapons the Saudi-Arabia, the Shah of Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia and Iraq. The USA enjoyed good relations with Malaysia and Morocco. In 1962, millions of Americans flocked to see "Lawrence of Arabia" and the ladies drooled over Omar Sharif. Turkey was a NATO member and an ally of the USA. Even as late as the 80s, the USA was supporting the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan. How did some segments of the Islamic world (not all, just some) become so bitter with the USA? Why did the the Iranians turn against the United States in 1979? It can't be Islam, because Islam was always there. I have researched this, but I'm trying to see if others have done their research as well.
For those who don't know about Operation Ajax, read this:

Ryunkin, I was aware that Omar Sharif was brought up a Catholic, but he converted to Islam in 1955. Good answer though.
| | A. | Relations between the U.S. and the Islamic world are and have been very complex. I recommend you read the book or watch the movie Charlie Wilsons' war which goes a long way to explain why we're having so much trouble in Afghanistan and why they don't like us. Also, with regard to U.S./Iranian relations you and the respondents so far have missed operation Ajax. That took place in 1954 and involved the c.i.a. takeover of the Iranian government that prevented it from nationalizing their oil supply and put the Shah in power. I believe that was the real motivation behind the hostage crisis of '79.
When it comes to the Middle East, the U.S. seems to be best at creating a never ending supply of enemies there. Sometimes I think that might have been the goal all along. The military industrial complex can make tons of money from perpetual war, and war is great for killing any progressive, humanitarian movement.
| Q. | Chevron should freeze investment in Myanmar or pull out, don't you think? | Related Search: Current Events | | | US energy giant Chevron, French oil group Total and China's top oil producer, China National Petroleum Corporation, are among companies giving much-needed income to Burma, defying activists' calls to pull out.
France's Total SA and Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Bhd, or
Petronas, pump gas from fields off Burma's coast through a
pipeline to Thailand, which takes 90per cent of Burma's gas
output...[Clearly] petroleum corporations offer economic support to the country's repressive junta, and in some cases are complicit in human rights abuses.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy last week urged his country's businesses, including Total, to freeze their investments in the impoverished nation, which has been ruled by the military since 1962

Promote better ties - trade --- that sort of thing --?
Wouldn't that make more sense than the 11 billion dollar in debt nation bomb everyone in the world nation we have been doing business with ?
Should we consider strengthening our ties with the British Commonwealth in order to promote trade and lessen the impact the US is going to have when it collapses ?
Only members listed above are "in"
| | A. | Definitely trade should be expanded everywhere, including Cuba and Venezuela. It's also a good idea to establish trade with the British Commonwealth countries, because many of them are stable. There will have to be a cleaning up, because Bush created so many enemies with his imperialistic policies. | | | |

| | A. | I've some doughs about Denmark (except when you talk about the Normans that trow out the OCCUPYING Muslims out of Malta). But these were Normans from Normandy.
I'm certain that Congo WAS NOT and is STILL NOT a Muslim country. Most of the Congolese were animist (believed in different gods), were there was Muslim influence this came from the slaveholders who were certainly worse than every European country that colonised somewhere.
You could as easy say that Congo before the colonisation by the Belgians was catholic because of some Portugese trading posts at the coast.

| | A. | Some people think rubbery cheese with holes in it is the greater crime, but I take your point.
It is not fashionable to favourably compare Islamic states with good old fashioned capitalist prejudices as exercised by the land of the free... and others.
I think though, that this is a little known fact rather than a serious argument supporting the cause of women's equality. The fact is, pretty well all societies discriminate against women in blatant and inexcusable ways.
