| | A. | Remember, there are 2 file extensions as far as flash is concerned. One is the raw .fla file which can be edited and the second is the actual .swf file.
If you download flash template check if it has the raw flash file too. Let me also tell you it is not very easy to modify a fla file as it may contain many movies and movies inside movies. It may also have actionscript embedded for buttons and other stuff.
Be careful while editing. You are better off creating one yourself. Start creating a simple one first.
